Just prior to the summer break, Abigail Chiu competed in the Longines Future Tennis Aces Competition and won the right to represent Hong Kong at a “Stars of Tomorrow” mini tournament for the top 12/U Girls of different countries held the same week as the French Open at Roland Garros.
This was to be the beginning of 66 best of 3 set matches summer and climbing the USTA Rankings list from #732 in June to an outstanding #27 as of August 25.
Abigail’s overall record stands at an impressive 52 wins, 14 losses
Organizing a junior tennis player’s schedule is no mean feat. There are many objectives to consider and careful planning is needed to ensure the player goals have a chance to be met and the tournaments are challenging and beneficial to development.
Abigail’s goal was to play against the nations best and with the help and guidance of Advantage Doyle Tennis Academy Texas and US coach Christina Moros an ambitious schedule was put together which meant a schedule rarely seen over one summer!
It would take years in Hong Kong to gain the matchplay Abigail endured. She was tested daily mentally to overcome adversity and challenges and welcomed a full schedule. Abigail has come through the summer with so much experience and knowledge which
can’t be duplicated anywhere in the world.
Abigail had to first compete in Texas Sectional tournaments which she won and then moving on to State and eventually US National Tournaments. She competed in 2 of the 4 biggest Level 1 National tournaments with a record of 17 – 5.
Her best result at Level 1 Nationals was winning a bronze ball at the Georgia Nationals. Abigail was featured on the Hot 100 list of junior players on the Tennis Recruiting Website, the premier site for junior tennis www.tennisrecruiting.net
At this stage it was time to plan the next step of the journey and with such a phenomenal summer Abigail has enrolled in The Academy of Excellence for the Student Athlete (ASEA). This school is time flexible allowing Abigail to study and pursue her dream of becoming the best player she can be.
Students train twice daily between school lessons at the Advantage Doyle Academy at the Polo Club of Texas. Whilst on weekends the touring team are on the road playing tournaments and continually testing themselves.
Abigail plays an aggressive style of tennis which still has a way to go. Her mid court game is improving and recognizing when to attack and when to defend is an area she is working on. She likes to come to the net and volley to finish off points and is developing a wicked second serve. She has come along way since our OTR trip to The Tennis Academy of Asia in 2006 and countless hours on court at the “Gap”.We are proud of her and wish the best of luck in her tennis career.
